Update Aug 28:
This post also reminded me of the Ricebowl challenge which has been around for a while now: http://www.freerice.com/ricebowl
Not sure how this actually works but the kiddos had fun doing the quizzes to donate grains of rice.

Now its Preeti's turn to be challenged by her friend Jeanne in Shanghai, China. To keep the relay going, she challenges her sister-in-law, Gladys in California, her friends Beth in Wisconsin (That was Ri's suggestion- Beth was his favorite second grade teacher!) and Lucinda in Vienna, Austria! Keep it going, ladies... :-) Update Aug 28: My dad, who lives in India, mentioned the Rice Bucket Challenge! Maybe we need to switch to this instead?! Read more about this on the NPR blog here!

We decided we needed to take advantage of the gorgeous weather we have been having here to explore the area! We were told of a storytelling center in nearby Tennessee, at Jonesborough, "Tennessee's oldest town". So off we went for a field trip! (This flexibility is the best aspect of our micro-school!). It is a well preserved, old town and the story telling center was interesting for us, as they had their teller-in-residence program on. A local artist/storyteller was the artist for the week, and told us stories of his childhood, as well as stories that he had heard through song and voice. But the best part of the day was the drive into and back home from Tennessee! Jim is always on the look out for the road less traveled, and we usually end up on one of those around here! Much excitement in the FLL team as the team leans about the challenge! Only 11 more sessions before the tournament! So much to learn and do...
We have been very fortunate to have met a number of people who we've connected with already. This certainly makes our transition easier! Rigel has connected with Craig, and the families are getting to know each other. Craig's mom, Martha, is from Colombia and has kindly agreed to do an Spanish-English session with us once a week! So, we've added Spanish to the Happer Micro-School curriculum! This has already motivated the kiddos to order in Spanish at our local, new fav, Mexican restaurant! Yesterday, we were invited to Craig's house which has a great, farmland location with gorgeous mountain views! We enjoyed spending the day with Craig and his family and made new animal friends too! Have a look: The ALS awareness Ice Bucket Challenge campaign has gone viral! Aneka was challenged by her friend Roxy, so she did the ALS awareness #Ice bucket challenge and in turn, challenged her friends who are all over the world... Then Ri was inspired to do the same! Here's a clip of them doing it. The Happer Micro-School is now official! We're registered (more on that later) and have begun our classes! Most days this past week or so of our soft start has consisted of doing reading and writing lessons on the beautiful wrap around porch at the cabin, sitting in one of the 4 rocking chairs, getting distracted by fighting hummingbirds and stalking would-be-hunter cats, or by starting the day doing math on the comfortable couches, in PJs. Afternoons are usually kept for projects- grape guns (soon to be posted on Rigel's page), gardening beds, cardboard challenges and the like or other activities like hiking, exploring another bendy road leading to nowhere-in-the-mountains, group activities (Lego League, Community garden, Library visits). We like this school! |
