Today we went to Price's General Store to get Jim a fishing license so that he can supervise Rigel who wants to go fishing around here. Children under the age of 16 don't need one. Thanks to Rigel's buddy, August, and his dad, Kevin, in Shanghai, Rigel began to learn how to fish and wants to use his going away present from them- a fishing rod with the accoutrements. What an interesting local, general store!

Today we went to help and to learn at Dig in!, which is a beautiful local community garden whose mission is to help provide fresh fruit and vegetables to other local hunger relief agencies and to inspire people in the local county- Yancey- to grow their own healthy foods! This was the perfect place for us to learn about starting our very own vegetable patch, that Preeti is very keen on doing. And the added benefits are helping our new community and getting to meet people who are friendly and experts on gardening! Here are a couple of interesting links for gardening related projects with kids- the first two links are citizen science links: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/monarch/AboutFall.html http://www.lostladybug.org http://www.almanac.com/content/mexican-bean-beetles Aneka and Ri are now part of a FLL team, run by a homeschooling family in our area, that will participate in the fall Lego Robotics tournament. The Challenge details will be released on August 26th but our sessions have started! Kids in both teams- Junior FLL and FLL met to get to know one another and to explore the newly received Lego kits. Parents also met to help and get to know each other too! We will meet every Tuesday to learn and to have fun! The activity is being sponsored by the local 4-H Program, that Aneka and Ri are now a part of too. The 4-H run some wonderful programs and activities with locals- a great resource for us! The folks there are very friendly and we have been made to feel very welcome!
To the dump, to the dump, to the dump we go! That's why we learn about sorting and recycling in school- makes sense now!
Much excitement at home, especially with the kiddos! Our stuff from China was going to arrive today. Would the big truck make it up the mountain to the cabin? Having our stuff brought to the cabin was the only option as all storage facilities in the area are either full or too small for all our junk! Lucky for us the cabin's garage is big enough, although how we will ever find anything in particular will be a challenge, as its all piled up! But we do have a ton of boxes and paper for play and projects Thinking of The Cardboard Challenge from The Imagination Foundation that we had so much fun doing last year at SAS!
