| On the road again...we love road trips in this family. Jim likes to find a road not too traveled, (the windier the better), Preeti likes to snap pictures out of the window, Aneka and Rigel like to bicker in the backseat! We had flown to NJ from Atlanta, and had parked our car at the airport. It was strange seeing tall buildings in downtown Atlanta after being in the mountains where the tallest things around are trees or the mountains themselves! We liked to feel of Atlanta and Preeti was especially happy to catch up with a distant cousin who she hadn't seen in over 20 years. She and her husband run a great Indian restaurant called Tadka, so she was the best resource to help us find Indian spices and lentils in Atlanta! Then, we traveled further south through Georgia, into Alabama. It was a beautiful road trip. Here are some pictures. |

Grammy has been wanting to bring us to this cool outdoor park museum in NJ for sometime now, so we did! And what a great park museum this is! There was something to do and be engaged in for all three generations and the big family group that we were. We were lucky with the weather too. Thanks, Grammy! That was a great choice!
This weekend we spent some time going on the Asap farm tour.. This was an opportunity for us to explore this beautiful region some more as well as to visit and learn about the different kinds of farms around. We saw a variety of farms from what I think of as a traditional farm- pigs, sheep, chickens etc, to vegetable farms, a boutique chicken/turkey farm where the farmer explained how poultry is processed of as well as some unusual ones, like a llama and alpaca farm where you can also learn how to spin wool, weave and felt. We learned the difference between the two! We also visited a farm/bakery which specializes in making delicious brick oven pizza out in the middle of nowhere (if we didn't know it was there, we would never have thought it existed!). Aneka and Rigel had a mini-assignment to ask at least one good question to the farmers we met. I think we all learned a lot! Here are some pictures from the farms we visited. We loved the fair as its always a fun, family thing to do! We especially enjoyed visiting the heritage section as we learned more about local arts and crafts. The quilts on display were remarkable- I am now so inspired to try making one myself! At the fair, we were invited to try our hand at wood turning. This was an awesome experience for all of us. The teachers, who all belonged to a wood turning club near Asheville, were very patient and encouraging. Look at how nice our masterpieces (spinning top, made by Aneka, wine bottle stopper made by Preeti, and honey droppers made by Grammy and Preeti) turned out! As Rigel put it: I can't believe I made that!! Another interesting experience for the kids was milking a cow! Here is a movie of our time at the North Carolina Mountain State Fair. Grammy and Poppop (Jim's parents) visited us from Princeton, New Jersey, for a few days this week. Aneka and Rigel were especially delighted since it meant a break from micro-schooling! (They are making up for this this weekend- they seriously didn't think they would get away with it, living with two parent educators! :-)). We loved having Grammy and Poppop visit and loved showing them around our new home and its surroundings. Here are some pictures from their visit. I will write a separate post on the NC Mountain state fair as we all had several interesting experiences there! |
