Last weekend I went to Black Mountain NC for a teen retreat with 4-H. Teens from all over the region came and met up for a couple of days to learn together. We got there Saturday morning and immediately started the workshops. These classes ranged from Wilderness Leadership to Robotics and we got to pick three of them. I did Wilderness Leadership, Global Awareness and MOVE! (which was about staying active and healthy). After our workshops we got to hang out with everybody that came during rec time. I went to the "Jam Session" which was super cool! There were three guys who were great at guitar and a girl who rocked the violin! We managed to find songs that everyone knew and sang/played them. That evening we had election "speeches" for kids who were running for district officers (that includes president, vice-president, secretary/treasurer and reporter). They put on skits or just spoke for a bit, then answered some of our questions. Finally there was the dance party complete with a DJ. The next morning we had elections and then a shoe cutting party which isn't what it sounds like. The organization Sole Hope makes shoes out of old denim jeans, so we helped out and cut and traced patterns for kids in Uganda. Finally our guest speaker was Jennifer Pharr Davis, who currently has the world record of hiking the Appalachian trail in an amazing 46 days 11 hours and 20 minutes, averaging almost 47 miles a day! All in all it was a pretty great weekend and I defiantly want to go back next year! ~Aneka
