Ri and Dad went on a hike to Lost Cove, an abandoned village close to the North Toe river. We joined the High Peaks Trail group one Sunday, hiking from a ridge in the Pisgah National Forest down trail to the old community (about 3 miles and maybe 2000 ft elevation change). There were never any roads to Lost Cove--the abandoned car (an old Chevy) was brought in by train and used to haul logs from a mill to the train. In the 1950's, when it was clear that a road would never be built there, the community finally abandoned Lost Cove, with many moving to Erwin Tennessee.
There are only a few houses left semi-standing, but several stone chimneys are very impressive. The woods have taken over just about everything except a small cemetery. We'd like to go again, maybe when Grammy and Poppop come.
